Animal Wrangling

Animal Wranglers are responsible for the casting, care and training of animals that perform in productions.

Recommended Skills for working in the Animal Wrangling Department:

  • Love of animals

  • Enjoy working outdoors and be in good physical condition

  • Organized, calm under pressure and able to solve problems

  • Knowledge of the media production industry

  • Ability to multitask and problem solve

A combination of demonstrated skills such as considerable experience in the handling, care and training of animals. This can include experience as a ranch hand, zookeeper, kennel attendant and veterinary assistant.. Experience driving vehicles used for transporting animals.

+ Animal Coordinator

The Animal Coordinator breaks down the script and lists the animals needed for the production. Tasks include budgeting, casting the animals, organizing the transportation of animals and equipment, as well as the safety of both the animals and crew.

+ Head Trainer/Handler/Wrangler

The Head Trainer/ Handler/Wrangler is responsible for managing the crew and for the care, safety and transportation of animals and safety of the crew while working around the animals.

+ Assistant to the Head Wrangler

The Assistant to the Head Wrangler assists the Head Wrangler in their duties.

+ Trainer

The Trainer ensures that animals are trained to perform for specific scenes. Tasks include taking care of the animals, ensuring the safety of the animals and crew and making sure that cast are properly instructed on how to handle the animal. The Trainer is responsible for proper housing, care and transportation for the animals.

+ Wrangler (large animal)

A Wrangler (large animal) is the person who takes care of large animals. They also assist Trainers and other Wranglers to transport, feed and care for the animals.

+ Handler (small animal)

A Handler (small animal) is the person who takes care of small animals. They also assist Wranglers and other Handlers to transport, feed and care for the animals.
