Camera Department

The Camera Department is responsible for creating and capturing the overall photographic impression of a film.

Recommended skills for working in the Camera Department:

  • Strong technical knowledge of digital / film processes and camera equipment.

  • In-depth knowledge of lighting techniques (Director of Photography).

  • A combination of practical, technical and creative expertise.

  • Able to adapt ideas instantly.

  • Able to make decisions quickly.

  • Precise attention to detail.

  •  Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies.

  • Diplomacy and sensitivity when working with artists and crew.

  • Physical stamina and strength.

  • Ability to imagine, research, plan and communicate an artistic vision within budget (Director of Photography).

A combination of demonstrated skills such as knowledge of photography, painting, research, project management and computer skills. Requires in depth knowledge of, and feel for the camera, as well as actual experience of handling camera equipment.

+ Director of Photography

The Director of Photography, also known as the Cinematographer, is responsible for the overall look of the production. The Director of Photography works very closely with the Director and the Production Designer to create and establish the mood and the visual style of the production. During photography, the Director of Photography oversees the technical crew, in particular the camera, lighting and grip departments.

+ Camera Operator

The Camera Operator physically operates the camera during a take. The Camera Operator works with the Director and the Director of Photography from setting up the shot to the final take. They also work closely with the 1st Assistant Cameraperson and the Dolly Grip.

+ First Assistant Cameraperson (Focus Puller; 1st AC)

The First Assistant Cameraperson, also known as a Focus Puller, is responsible for keeping the picture in sharp focus. They keep focus by paying attention to the distance between the subject and the camera. They are in charge of the rental, maintenance, care and return of all cameras.

+ 2nd Assistant Cameraperson (2nd AC)

The 2nd Assistant assists the camera operator in positioning and moving the camera, and is responsible for changing and charging camera batteries, changing lenses and for camera reports. They perform the slating on set, using the clapperboard. The 2nd Assistant works very closely with the 1st Assistant Cameraperson.

+ Steadicam Operator (SCam)

The Steadicam Operator maneuvers the camera to establish the continuity of composition using a special rig that enables fluid moving camera shots for specific scenes. This allows the camera to follow the action in tight spots. The rig allows the Steadicam Operator to move while the camera remains steady.

+ Still Photographer (SP)

The Still Photographer shoots photographs of crew, behind the scenes and the actors. These photographs will be used for publicity purposes for the promotion of the film prior to or during its release in theatres or on television.

+ Camera Utility / Loader

The Camera Utility is responsible for coordinating location moves, scheduling daily crew and ordering gear. They assist in building, dismantling, and moving gear. This position communicates, on behalf of the Camera Department, with other departments and service suppliers.

+ Electronic Cameraperson

The Electronic Cameraperson shoots live action in various forms and shooting styles. They may specialize in handheld configurations, studio pedestal or long lens for sports events. Most electronic camerapeople own and operate their own camera and equipment packages, which are of the highest broadcast standards.

+ Digital Imaging Technician (DIT) / Digital Management Technician (DMT)

The Digital Imaging Technician is responsible for maintaining the workflow and dataflow coordinated with post and sound to deliver the required data properly secured. The Digital Management Technician is responsible for maintaining the workflow and dataflow, from an off-set perspective with a focus on production of dailies deliverables.
