Paint

The Paint Department is responsible for painting sets, props and signs on a production.

Recommended sSkills for working in the Paint Department: 

  • General understanding and interest for the art and design

  • Ability to plan and communicate an artistic vision within budget 

  • Ability to work independently, multitask and problem-solve 

  • Interest in making creative use of material

A combination of demonstrated skills such as drawing and painting, artistic ability, experience painting for television, commercials or theatre, commercial sign writing, hand lettering, layout, faux finishing, breakdown, colour theory, use of unconventional materials.

+ Key Scenic Artist

The Key Scenic Artist is responsible for the supervision and organization of tasks in the Paint Department. Tasks include delegating work, purchasing materials and equipment and managing the budget.

+ Paint Foreman

The Paint Foreman assists in painting sets and props. They are in charge of painters at a studio or on location and must be able to assume the tasks of the Key Scenic Artist if they aren’t available.

+ On Set Painter

The On Set Painter acts as the Key Scenic Artist on set under the direction of the Director of Photography, Camera Operator and in coordination with the On Set Carpenter and On Set Dresser. Tasks include maintaining the sets and set pieces as well as adjusting reflective surfaces as needed.

+ Scenic Artists/Painter

The Scenic Artist (or Painter) is responsible for creating finishes that mimic marble, wood, breakdown and a variety of other effects for props, sets or backdrops and at any scale.

+ Sign Painter

The Sign Painter is responsible for signs for the production.

+ Plasterer

The Plasterer prepares molds for casting (plaster, rubber or fibreglass) to create scenic elements for sets.

+ Painter

The Painter works to sand, file, seal, prime, undercoat, spray paint, paint and varnish sets and props. This can be in studio or on location.

+ Painter’s Assistant

The Painter’s Assistant helps Painters to complete their tasks.
